Fake Mosaic

for SOPRANO SAXOPHONE and PERCUSSION

Fake Mosaic was written for Erin Rogers and Chris Graham of Hypercube and premiered on November 20, 2020 through the Charlotte New Music Festival. The piece explores timbral and rhythmic transformations by treating the two parts as one complex hyperinstrument capable of producing the entire spectrum from pure noise to pure pitch. The two voices transition between fusion and disunity and the piece gives agency to generative processes (Euclidean rhythms in particular) that explore the continuum between these disparate states.

Fake Mosaic was written with the chaos of the 2020 U.S. presidential election in the background. The title refers to the county maps that television news roll out every four years—fake mosaics of land that reduce human lives to nothing more than blue and red tiles.
